Final collage “Into the Woods.” Some of the six collaborative stages are shown, and the beginning. We had a group of six: Kim Cardoso, Celena Peet, Julie Blankenship, Maureen Manning and Johanna Norry. A thanks to everyone, and to Marty for helping us stay on schedule and for encouragement throughout. 🙂

Stage 5 of Julie Blankenship’s collage. I’ve added some monarch butterflies, people, an upside down coral fungus, and a finely cut wildflower.

Stage 6 of Johanna Norry’s collage. I added the three women, the hands on the mirror and a few more small pieces. It’s now back to Johanna for the final round.

This is Celena Peet’s collage, for Stage 6. I added some small details, mostly thinking about the sepia-toned photo that Johanna Norry had added. I added graphic elements to the musical instrument, a flower and words from a vintage catalog, and then a small logo beneath the embroidery, for some contrast between the black circle and red thread, keeping in the red and white palette. Collaborators before me: Kim Cardoso, Maureen Manning, Johanna, Julie Blankenship.

I received this collage and then did nothing for a long time. It was very dark and came with an early suggestion to add small elements or black. In the end, I added one piece of black screen, torn when my dog walked through it. All that time, and I added just one element!

Maureen Manning’s collage, Stage 4. Contributors: Johanna Norry, Julie Blankenship, me. I stayed with a circle motif (small, striped circles in the peripheral) and then found the tiny vintage dress-catalogue illustrations, in my possibility-pile of papers, happened to fit perfectly within the circles, so I couldn’t say no to that. Isn’t it strange when disparate elements fit within newly created elements, without any planning?

For this one, I picked up on an airplane/air mail theme when I saw the boarding pass and window envelope. So after rubbing the puzzle piece, and adding the marks which looked like clouds to me, I also transferred the big red image of the airplane.

This is Kim Cardoso’s starter collage that has been added to by Maureen Manning and me. I added bits of text from photos I took of papers in a artist’s archive materials, a piece of a sewing pattern and a bit of a map legend.

This is Celena Peet’s starter collage that has been added to by Kim Cardoso, Maureen Manning and me. I added the photograph of the man playing a stringed instrument, the letter press printed trail of dots, as well as the red letter press printed wood veneer circle, the red car and the route 66 sign, the latter two of which came from a 1970s NatGeo.

This is the third round for Johanna Norry’s collage, after Julie Blankenship made her additions. I added some elements near the middle, such as bee, flower, twig, and cyanotype scraps, but knocked down the colors of the flower/bee with an overlay of dress-pattern tissue so it wouldn’t become too much of a focal point at this point.

Here’s my starter collage. We’re a group of six–four of us collaborated last year and we had a great experience working on the collages and getting to know each other. We have two new collage artists added to our group and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s work–lots of art styles and backgrounds and we put it all together last time in interesting and surprising ways.
